Chiusa/Klausen enjoys a privileged, central location in the very heart of South Tyrol, between the bishop town of Bressanone/Brixen to the north and the provincial capital Bolzano/Bozen to the south.
Miles of vineyards and chestnut groves spread over the sunny flanks of the Isarco/Eisacktal valley, dominated by high mountains covered in thick woodland and verdant pastures dotted with picture-perfect villages and farmsteads.
Chiusa/Klausen has been quite rightly acclaimed as one of the most beautiful towns in Italy. Its picturesque buildings with their crenellated facades are towered over by the imposing walls of the Sabiona/Säben monastery. Dubbed the “acropolis of Tyrol”, the monastery sits perched on a rocky cliff that for centuries used to serve as the seat of a powerful bishop. After the bishopric was moved to Bressanone/Brixen, a castle, the monastery and several churches were built on what is now known as the Holy Mountain. The area has plenty to offer to anyone with an interest in art and history. The Isarco/Eisacktal valley is also home to one of South Tyrol’s most beloved traditions: the Törggelen, an autumnal activity that involves indulging with new wine, roasted chestnuts and other local delicacies.
