Where the narrow Isarco/Eisacktal valley widens out a little, you can find the town of Chiusa/Klausen – a medieval gem with winding alleys, a picturesque historic centre and a timeless atmosphere. Nestled among lush vineyards and close to the Dolomites, it is a holiday destination of incredible variety.

Chiusa/Klausen enjoys a privileged, central location in the very heart of South Tyrol, between the bishop town of Bressanone/Brixen to the north and the provincial capital Bolzano/Bozen to the south.

Miles of vineyards and chestnut groves spread over the sunny flanks of the Isarco/Eisacktal valley, dominated by high mountains covered in thick woodland and verdant pastures dotted with picture-perfect villages and farmsteads.

Chiusa/Klausen has been quite rightly acclaimed as one of the most beautiful towns in Italy. Its picturesque buildings with their crenellated facades are towered over by the imposing walls of the Sabiona/Säben monastery. Dubbed the “acropolis of Tyrol”, the monastery sits perched on a rocky cliff that for centuries used to serve as the seat of a powerful bishop. After the bishopric was moved to Bressanone/Brixen, a castle, the monastery and several churches were built on what is now known as the Holy Mountain. The area has plenty to offer to anyone with an interest in art and history. The Isarco/Eisacktal valley is also home to one of South Tyrol’s most beloved traditions: the Törggelen, an autumnal activity that involves indulging with new wine, roasted chestnuts and other local delicacies.

We, the tourist guides and tourist leader of South Tyrol, will be happy to take you on a discovery journey:

On a 1½-hour guided tour we will show you the historic centre of Chiusa/Klausen, the churches and the former Capuchin monastery – now converted into the town museum and home to the famous Loreto treasure that belonged to the Queen of Spain. Travel back in time as you walk down the medieval alleys and discover Klausen’s past as a town of artists, which hosted Albrecht Dürer on his way to Italy and became the subject of one of his drawings.

On a half-day or one-day experience our guides will guide you through Bressanone/Brixen, take you to the stunning Sciliar/Schlern plateau and show you the best the Dolomites can offer, with their quaint valleys and thrilling passes. The lift facilities to the Plose and the Siusi/Seiser Alp outdoor wonderlands are a stone’s throw away, and it only takes a 30-minute drive to reach Bolzano/Bozen.
