The South Tyrolean Wine Road

If you decide to visit the area that extends along the Wine Road, you can look forward not only to the largest wine-growing area in South Tyrol with its a range of excellent local wines, but also to sunny, sub-Mediterranean weather and people with an equally sunny disposition.

Wine & sunshine: this summarises the areas known as Oltradige/Überetsch and Bassa Atesina/Unterland to a T. If you are after the more Mediterranean side of South Tyrol, the broad Adige/Etschtal valley is just the thing. The landscape is shaped by rolling hills and covered in lush vineyards and fruit orchards, slopes coated in woodland with the occasional clear lake shining like an eye amid green valleys sprinkled with historic villages – a very different atmosphere than the one you find up in the mountains, with their farmsteads and huts. Explore the local towns and their renowned wines, like Termeno/Tramin and its Gewürztraminer or Caldaro/Kaltern and the exquisite red grapes that grow around the shores of its lake. The numerous castles and manors bear witness to the appreciation of the beauty and fertility that this area has been enjoying for centuries. Geographically speaking, the valley is protected by the Mendola/Mendel mountains to the west, while the eastern side is home to a plateau dotted with picture-perfect villages and to the Trodena/Truden Nature Park with the stunning Mt. Corno Bianco/Weißhorn and the impressive Bletterbach gorge. To the south, where the town of Salorno/Salurn is located, there also lies the border between bilingual South Tyrol and the neighbouring province of Trento, where Italian is the only official language.

During a two-hour guided tour, we will explore the charming historic towns along the Wine Road, such as Caldaro/Kaltern, Appiano/Eppan, Termeno/Tramin or Egna/Neumarkt, and round off the experience with a visit to the local wineries or a lakeside walk in Caldaro/Kaltern.

A half-day or full-day guided tour will give you the opportunity to explore the Wine Road, soaking up the gentle landscape and savouring the hospitality and wine culture that is typical of the local villages. You will have the chance to walk around Lake Caldaro/Kalterersee and sample traditional fare under a lakeside pergola, sip a refreshing aperitif on the beach or ride a pedal boat across the lake. The tour includes a visit to the main town Bolzano/Bozen, the Merano/Meran area and/or the Venosta/Vinschgau valley. We can also take the funicular that climbs up to the Mendola/Mendel pass or visit the Bletterbach gorge – South Tyrol’s Grand Canyon – and its visitor centre. Other alternatives include a visit to the neighbouring provincial capital Trento, with its Renaissance architecture, the bishop’s cathedral, the princely castle and the Roman lower town. Lake Garda and the Brenta Dolomites are also within easy reach.
